Belton Splash Pad & Park | Central Texas Kid's Entertainment by Norman Photography ~ Killeen, Ft. Hood, Harker Heights Children Photographer

Belton Splash Pad & Park

Belton is a lovely, small, yet high quality town just outside of Killeen off of I35.  Many newcomers have heard of and driven by Belton but might not have visited yet.  Go!  They have a number of attractions (mental note for later blogs) including a small museum, the UHMB campus, Nolan Creek Hike & Bike Trail, and a whole set of locally owned restaurants.  I recently found my new favorite attraction in Belton, the Splash Pad on 401 N. Alexander St.  You can see how much fun we had below!

So what's so special about this splash pad?  It's clean.  It's small.  It's free.  The water comes on at 10 and shuts off at 8 I believe.  Sarah & I (and lovely Pam Garcia) took all the kids there for the first time this summer.  When I say kids, I mean toddlers and babies.  We range from 2 1/2 - 9 months at the time.  I will say it's probably not a spray park that will hold the attention of older kids (10+) for a long amount of time.  But through the eyes of someone ~35in tall, it's a water park wonderland.

When we arrived, I was pleased to see not too many people there.  While we adore and recommend the Killeen area water facilities, they are often crowded and my two little ones just get alittle overwhelmed (as do I having them by myself during the day with loads of people around).  Besides us, there were maybe 10 other kids + moms there on a Friday morning.  This combined with the cozy size of the facility was great.  I could let the girls "roam" and explore while standing on the edge and see both at the same time.  Not having to worry about the depth of water they were getting into was also really nice.

Another thing I appreciate is shade.  Anyone living in Texas this summer knows it's vital.  Large oak trees surround the facility as well as a covered pavilion (with restrooms).  The picnic tables at the splash pad were covered and we were not in the sun at all during breaks.  The tables were perfect for our early picnic lunch we had after playing for a while.  Is there really anything better than a cold pbj, Capri Sun, and snacks after playing in the water on a hot day?  Another compliment I'll address is that the trash cans weren't overflowing.  It's probably an odd thing to mention, but to me it shows the grounds are well taken care of.  I hate trash cans with old food in them attracting all kinds of biting, stinging insects.  I'd love to see recycling bins but I'll take what I can get.

So what about the actual splash pad itself?  The water cycles and changes what it shoots out of every 5 minutes or so.  It provides a nice attention change for the kids.  There are multiple spouts of sorts ranging from water shooting out of the ground, to on your head, to out of a wagon you can run through.  When we arrived, my oldest was weary of getting sprayed.  By the time we left, her favorite spray was the one she could stick her entire head into at full blast.  My youngest wasn't so keen on being sprayed in the face.  She preferred putting her hands in and quickly running away.  If I would have worn a swim suit and ran in, I'm sure she would have explored more.

So, overall, we loved it!  Besides the spray area, there is a wooden playground (kudos on the rubber mulch Belton) for ages 4+ and a hike and bike trail that runs along Nolan Creek.  Do I have any complaints?  I have 2.  While there is a fence blocking the spray park from the road, it has an opening on both sides that I wish were fully enclosed.  Kids do get away sometimes so be extra careful if they venture out that way.  Also, on the side by the pavilion, there is a area that collects water that is on the full sun.  It sits stagnant and lovely, slippery algae grows there in the glorious sun.  Be mindful of running in that area and wear water shoes with traction.

I know school has started but it's Texas.  We'll be in the 90s until at least October.  This spray park is a nice retreat from the heat that is close and won't cost you anything but gas.  I highly recommend it and commend Belton for doing a great job!  Is there a special place you like to take your kiddos or maybe not take the kiddos to cool off in the summer heat?  Let us know by commenting below!

iheartfaces "White" | Killeen, Ft. Hood, Harker Heights Child Photographer

Paige

The challenge over at iheartface this week is "white."  I thought about a recent session I had for Paige's 10th birthday because I love how the white compliments the neutral tones of the image.  She started out the session in a lovely blue dress and changed into her original tank and shorts to get more comfortable for the last site.  I love this picture because it's just so naturally her.  There aren't any bright colors catching the eye away from her personality.  The whites, browns, and blues simply allow you to see Paige as the sweet, funny 10-year-old she's grown into today.

A review of Highlights from Norman Photography
There are a few things I love seeing in a salon, or anywhere for that matter.
(1) Cleanliness  (2) Friendliness (3) Professionalism
I've bounced around to and from salons for a variety of reasons.  I've always been generally satisfied (other than once when I got my hair chopped off when I was pregnant, ugh, bad memory) with all the hair salons I've been to throughout the years.  When I went into Highlights the first time on Sarah's recommendation, I was impressed.  I met with Roxanne for the first time and she was happy, friendly, and helpful.  We had a lovely conversation and I loved my hair cut!  Maybe I've seen Salon Makeover (don't judge, I love Bravo) too many times, but I knew I had found a quality salon that I'd return to again.  And I have!  Not only do I go now, but Sarah goes and so do her boys!  Need a new cut, color, or style?  We highly recommend you calling and asking for Julie, Melinda, Roxanne, Brandon, Valerie, or Mary-Christina!  And if your looking for an Esthetician, ask for Alyssa, or a massage therapist, ask for Shelley!  They'll all take great care of you!  Tell them we sent you!

iheartfaces "Pets" | Killeen, Ft. Hood, Harker Heights Pet Photographer

Maddie Lynn Norman

Placed 5th!  Wahoo!

This week's theme over at iheartfaces is "Pets" and I'll be entering the image below of my 4-year-old Basset Hound, Maddie.  Now, let me state that I am well aware this is not the best picture to be entering into a contest because the focus could be better and I'm not in love with the positioning.  That said, I love it.  It makes me laugh (especially today when the baby has been teething, ugh)!  I love it because although I have beautiful pictures of Maddie lounging in the grass looking all lazy and Bassety, this picture of her loving up on Mallory with true intentions of stealing her peanut butter cracker is the Maddie I know and love best.  She isn't rough or mean, for she is most successful when she gingerly grabs the target snack and slowly maneuvers it out of the baby's hand.   I hardly ever notice until I hear, "Ahh, ha ha ha.  Moooommmmma. Bad dog!"  I blame the oldest child for her bad behavior because even at my request to not do it, she's been feeding the dogs since she was old enough to and thinks it's great fun.  But, we all forgive Maddie.  She's been a great dog and lets the girls roll all over her and drag her around by the collar.  I think she deserves a peanut butter cracker for that every once in a while!

Sarah's Bridal Session Previews | Central Texas Wedding Photographer

Bridal previews?  Aren't you suppose to wait until after the wedding?  Well...yes.  Usually.  In this case, these bridals are a do-over.  Sarah and I are getting into the wedding scene and need bridal shots for our portfolio.  Sarah stepped in and we set up a session!  Isn't she gorgeous?  She happens to be my longest childhood friend, back to 6th grade (year to remain nameless as I'm feeling old now).  I'm not sure how exactly we became friends back at ol' Rancier Middle School but we've stayed friends ever since.  And you know how I gauge a good friend?  Even if you haven't seen each other lately (husbands, jobs, school, kids, you know how it goes) you can pick up a conversation like you saw each other yesterday.   I'll save more sappiness for her full session post and move on now.

Alongside my love of detail shots is a love I have for sun drenched shots.  They just feel ooey gooey warm and fuzzy to me and I think they're beautiful.

 You're a lucky man Tim!

Behind the scenes reflected in the fabulous sunglasses is one of our other best friends from long time back, Ms. Katie Snipes!  It is always a good time with these girls!

Beautiful.  They turned out better than I could have imagined.  Thank you Sarah!  I can't wait to edit the rest!

Billy & Melissa | Killeen, Ft. Hood, Harker Heights Wedding & Engagement Photographer

I am so looking forward to next summer when we get to photograph Billy and Melissa's wedding, because if their engagement pictures are an indicator of how good the wedding pictures will be than I will be a lucky girl!  Not only did they start off well by choosing the beautiful location of Cathedral Oaks Event Center, but their clothing choices were perfect and they brought props to use for their announcement and thank you cards.  As a photographer, you really can't ask for anything more.  Let's take a walk through their session...

A perfect silhouette with blue accents taken inside of the bridal room.

A double reflection shot right outside of the bridal room.  Cathedral Oaks choose quality windows and it shows!

Melissa made these herself for their thank you cards.  Aren't they cute?

Outside on the patio under the oaks.

If you've seen a lot of my work, you know how much I adore detail shots.

 Dancing

Really, you can see why I love detail shots right?

We did many different shots for ideas to use for the announcement cards!  SO cute!

If you've seen Melissa & Billy's previews, you've read about how perfect the timing was for the train to come by carrying the tanks (with Billy being a soldier and all)!

 Love it!

The event center also has made over a yellow house on their property for smaller, more intimate events. It's cute and colorful!

Congratulations you guys!  Can't wait to see all the future has to bring!

A&M's Milestone Session | Killeen, Ft. Hood, Harker Heights Child Photographer

My husband would cringe if he saw me referring to our girls as A&M, for he graduated from UT and we are hard core UT Longhorn fans in this household.  Maybe I can make up for it by doing a UT apparel session for him, we definitely have enough clothes for it!  Anyway, A&M are my (Alisha) daughters.  Avery is the oldest at 2.5 and Mallory is my baby at 1 year.  Avery is a talker, must know everything, in your business kinda kid.  But she is such a hilarious and sweet girl.  Mally isn't as much of a talker but she loves to love on anything and everyone and always has the most dirt on her at the end of the day.  I adore them.  This session was for Mallory's birthday primarily but it works out great that Avery hits her half year mark at the same time.  It'll be a flip session come December before I know it!

For this session, we traveled down the road to Salado and I let them loose on the Main Street bridge, as it is pretty much a huge playpen.  They loved it.  I sat in the middle and let them do all the work!  They are some of my favorite pictures I have of them.

I have the one above printed at a 20x20 and hanging in our hallway.  Maybe one day I'll remember to take pic of them hanging!

This image I had printed as an 11x14 double matted and hung with ribbon over Mally's bed.  I should have known it would be too small, so I plan on printing two more to go on the sides of it.  Always go bigger ya'll!

She's hardly ever still!

Laughing at her sister sprinting up and down the bridge!

Oh I love those chunky legs!

She has a nerdy like Urkel laugh that is so very cute!

And she's still perfect with uneven numbers of teeth!

She's always had the bluest eyes!

You can actually see the baseball field behind us reflected in her eyes on this shot.

It took a head swap for Avery and careful editing, but I got a beautiful picture of both girls looking my way!  This is rare and I send a thank you to the makers of Photoshop for making it all possible.  The girls' outfits are from GAP (of course I paid full price and now they are 90% off) and I probably spent 3 hours of divided time deciding on them.  I went with blue and purple because those are the colors in Mallory's room and the theme for her birthday party!  Always make things matter :)

Meet the Teach Night In KISD | Central Texas Info, Advice, & Review by Norman Photography, Killeen, Ft. Hood Harker Heights Family Photographer

August is an exciting time of year in a special way.  It's a solemn end of summer spent with friends and family that provided a break to recompose for a new year of learning.  I really feel this applies to teachers, students, and parents.  There are so many different sides of preparation to returning to school that I think sometimes we all get lost in our own side.  It's easy to do, especially if you've not had all 3 experiences of being a student lately, sending your baby to kindergarten or college, or preparing and welcoming 22+ exciting yet terrified students and parents into your life.  Here are some tips on back to school from a teacher (with a little mom mixed in) and will apply mainly to lower grades and KISD.  I'm not returning to teach this year but I've had 5 Augusts in KISD and NISD (San Antonio) teaching K/1 from which to pass knowledge along.  Here goes...

Attending

All schools have them, even my kids' MDO.  Go to them.  We expect you to be there.  If you absolutely cannot make it, find out who your kid's teacher is, email or call him or her, and ask if you can come up and drop school supplies off and that if he or she has 5 minutes, you'd love to say hello!  We are crazy busy this week but it can't hurt to ask.  She said no, she has meetings?  Don't panic.  Email and introduce yourself.  Just avoid waiting until 7:25am the morning school starts to introduce yourself.  It's the absolute worst time possible.  Kids (and moms, some dads, possibly granparents) will be crying, the secretary is bringing a new student to our room who just registered late, we have to verify how all the students will be getting home, what they are eating, if they brought food for snack, ect.  In a nutshell, find a way to let you teacher know about all the fears and concerns you have about your baby being in school other than the morning of the first day.

When You Get There

So what will "Meet the Teacher" be like?  You'll enter the school and hopefully be greeted by an admin of some kind helping you find who your child's teacher is and where he or she is located.  There will be a PTA table (enroll and buy your kid a shirt or we'll hound you with requests later on due to contests our class can win).   You'll walk in to your child's room after wandering down the hallway comparing bulletin boards (don't, it doesn't reflect the quality of the teacher) while your child is either sprinting ahead of you or lingering terrified behind you.  You'll find the room and scan for the teacher.  He or she will be the one all the parents are watching and waiting for.  It can be a major competition between you and other parents to get those couple of minutes you've been aching for all summer.  Be patient.  Sign in.  Check and see if there is paperwork on your kid's desk and start filling it out.  Take a tour around the room.  Don't panic if every square inch of the walls isn't covered in posters and decorations.  The empty spaces are where your child's artwork and learning tools will go as we progress through the year.  We'll be trying to remember who came in when and trying to be polite enough to tell those behind you to wait.  It's difficult.  We truly want to hear you, remember your name, which child belongs to you, and the specifics.

What NOT to do

You've been waiting for this all summer.  Maybe since last school year if you didn't have that great of experience and have been dying for another chance at a new teacher.  Number 1 rule:  All teachers are different.  Do not assume we are going to be the same as last year or treat your child the same way.  I personally don't want to know if you or your child had a bad experience last year.  Not yet anyway.  Is that too blunt? Start fresh!  Get to know each other and develop a relationship. There is nothing worse than this following conversation as a first impression, "Hi!  I'm J's mom.  I hope you haven't heard how much he was in trouble last year.  Has his teacher talked to you already? She and I didn't get along and she never liked him.  Let me just tell you now that I work full time and will not be taking calls about his behavior during work hours."  Ouch.  Yeah, definitely a way to get yourself remembered.  You sure don't want to hear, "Hi!  I'm Mrs. M and I can't wait to have a new class.  I had monsters last year and the parents were dreadful!"  Everyone deserves a second chance and a fresh start.  Is your child gifted and you are sure he or she will be moving to another class soon?  You might be right!  Remember there is a process to this that is usually out of the teacher's control.  Mention it but don't expect him or her to request a class change for you.  Ask about the process and go from there.  I hope I haven't scared or offended anyone yet, but the above occurs every year.

What TO do

Plan ahead.  Try your best to be there as close to start time as possible.  You don't need to stalk the front door and sprint as soon as it opens but if you come in 5 minutes before the event ends, you're going to meet a very tired teacher with a full memory card.  When it's your turn to speak to the teacher, introduce yourself and your child (who needs to be with you, not destroying the classroom with his or her siblings).  Tell the teacher positive things.  How early did your child make you shop for school supplies? How many workbooks did you buy from Walmart to help prepare for school (please don't bring them with you, we believe you)?  Is there a volunteer sheet you can sign up on?  If you have vital questions or concerns, try asking.  Don't be offended if the teacher asks you to simply write it on your child's info sheet for a reminder.  Having it in writing is much better for us when we sit down the next day to organize all the info.  This is why we have you fill out packets at this time.  Medical issues or medication?  Write them down ahead of time to give to your teacher and inform the nurse!  You more than likely provided this info at registration.  Just remember, there's about a 5 minute max per parent before we run out of time.

School Supplies

Bring them.  Your teacher will adore you for not making her go through them the first morning of school.  There will be designated spots for supplies for you to distribute all of them.  Even if you can't make Meet the Teacher night, drop them off.  Ask if he or she can use any help sorting through them to next day.  Stick to the supply list.   I know it's tempting to buy the iCarly and Star Wars products, but if the list says "red folder" it means red folder, not red folder with Elmo on it.  Why?  Kids are kids and they will get jealous and "borrow" the cool items.  It's easier for everyone if everything is the same.  They fight enough over the sharp pencils with the best erasers and least dried out markers.  Save the Lisa Frank and Dora apparel for backpacks, lunch boxes, and clothing (if you aren't at a uniform school).  Should you label everything?  Maybe.  Did the supply list ask you to?  If not, wait.  All teachers do supplies differently.  Some have the kids share all supplies while others do personal supplies.  Talk to the teacher before you distribute supplies and ask about labeling.  Bring a black permanent marker in case you need to label a few things.  Please label lunch boxes, backpacks (at least a dozen other kids will have your kid's backpack), jackets, hats, ect.  Schools donate mountains of clothes in the lost and found every year.

Lastly

Teachers are here for your child.  I know it's clique but we don't work for the money or summer vacation and our first priority is our students.  We truly love your children.  They are not just a reflection of their home anymore, but the people they encounter daily at school as well.  Teachers are as human as the next person and do have bad days.  We also understand kids and parents have bad days too.  If you see consistent negativity, talk to your teacher.  We do miss things and sometimes kids are afraid for various reasons to let us know things.  On the other side, if you have a fabulous teacher, let him or her know!  Little notes of appreciation go a long way!  We wish you a great Meet the Teacher night!  And please don't forget to visit your music, PE, library, ect teachers while you show you child around school!  They love your kids too!

My Disclaimers
No teacher is the same as no mom or dad is the same.  We all have different styles, personalities, and opinions.  This article only reflects my style, personality, and opinion.  Please don't expect your child's teacher to feel the same.  Your experience with KISD's Meet the Teacher night will depend on your school and we in no way are speaking on behalf of the district.  I tend to be very direct with info, so I apologize if I scared or offended anyone.   If everyone was the same, it'd be a boring world.  Questions and comments are welcome.  Perhaps we'll address more school issues as we go this year!

Iheartfaces "Beautiful Eyes" | Killeen, Ft. Hood, Harker Heights Children's Photographer

The weekly challenge this week over at iheartfaces is "Beautiful Eyes" and I'm going to pull the mom card and use my sweet baby girl.  This sandy haired, blue eyed sweet baby is my 1-year-old, Mallory.  She is friendly yet cautious, sweet yet stubborn, and prissy yet the girl loves dirt.  My oldest was 9 months old when I found out I was pregnant again and she's been the best surprise I've ever gotten.  Ok, I could go on and on.  Mom card away!

So, I took the girls to Salado one morning and let them have free range of the infamous Main St. bridge.  Being my girls are both 2 and under, I considered it's railings a large playpen.  They loved it.  I just sat and clicked away as they ran circles.  More of their session can be seen here on our Facebook page (mental note to blog it) if you'd like to see all the pics.  After the bridge lost its charm, we decided to take a break and ate Subway for lunch at about 10am.  I'll seriously eat Subway 24 hours a day.  After lunch, diaper changes, lemonade, and cookies, we headed to a historic cabin for a little more frolicking.  I caught this pic of Mally on the cabin's porch and my favorite thing about it is if you look closely, you can see that her eyes are so clear you can see the baseball field behind us reflected in them.  I do very basic editing (we like a natural look here) so I hardly ever touch up her eyes in photoshop.  They are truly this beautiful every single day, all day.

I adore photographing children, so if you'd like to get shots of your sweet babes like this one, contact me!  We do not have a studio and work on location only.  According to a sweet grandpa from a recent session, "This is the only way to photograph kids!"

Adams' Family Previews | Ft. Hood, Killeen, Harker Heights Outside Newborn and Family Photographer

Meet the Adams and their new addition, Maria!  Isn't she sweet?  All my past newborns have been boys (which I love) so hearing that Lucero was having a baby girl made me so happy!  I have two cuties of my own you know!  I was fortunate to get to meet the Adams through a past client who happens to be Lucero's sister!  We had an opening in our Military Appreciation Program for August and she let us know that Nate would be home on R&R to meet his new daughter and we set it all up (thanks Liz!).

Early this morning, we met at Central Texas College to get a nice quiet, relaxed, shady spot to keep Maria comfortable.  She was an angel (with hiccups) the whole time!  Dad doted all over his girls and mom couldn't look any better after having a baby 2 weeks ago (you know I'm jealous Lucero :)!  I hadn't taken a family to CTC lately and it didn't disappoint.  The shots came out lovely and I'm so happy they love them.

Stay safe on the rest of your tour Nate and thank you for all you & your fellow soldiers do to keep our families safe each and every day!

Interested in a free Military Appreciation Program session for yourself or a deserving military family?  You can find more information about the programhere, including what makes a family (or couple) eligible and what availability we have.   And we do allow reservations to be made a year in advance, so don't feel silly about calling for an appointment for next August!  We only so 2 sessions a month and they go quickly!
